Mr Kyle Emerson, a Hilton College old boy and past sports coordinator and Geography teacher at Grace College, was our guest speaker at the annual Sports Awards evening. He aptly titled his presentation SMALL THINGS, BIG IMPACT. Three stand-out points he made were;
1. Go back to basics. What it means is that we start with the basic, the non-negotiables, the smallest things and we get those right first. Just like an unshaven face, your socks being half way up your calf, your shirt only half tucked in or…. your untidy bed – they make a statement. The small things, can make a big impact.
2. ‘’Good manners will often take people where neither money nor education will take them.” One of my favourite quotes from FJ Coppin who was alive in the 1800’s and those words still have relevance today. Manners are a small thing, that can leave a lasting impact.
3. Never forget the Why. “Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world really needs is people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman. You owe it to yourself to be your best! When you remember the why, it has a motivating impact. In brief, if you want to change your world, and make an impact on your journey, pay attention to the smaller things first. Come back to basics and get the little details right. Ensure that you are well mannered and respectful to those around you, and remember why you chose to do the thing that you are doing and don’t forget that passion and drive that you have within you.
