Debating is an essential life skill that helps learners develop confidence, learn to think on their feet, and argue their point of view. It also teaches them how to research, structure an argument, and articulate their thoughts clearly.

The Grace College debating teams have had an exceptional season. The Junior Team, consisting of Michael Brown, Jishan Pillay, and Cole David, have shown remarkable growth and finished in an impressive second place in the Pietermaritzburg Debating league after a 75% winning spout, showcasing the grit of Grace College learners.

The Senior Debating Team, composed of Rowan Mack, Jenna Henning, Aeryn Reid, and Zoan Redman, also had a successful run. Despite falling short in the quarterfinals against TWC’s best team, their performance is commendable. Rowan Mack deserves a special mention for his outstanding achievements. Not only is he selected to represent KZN and awarded Silver for his three best speaker awards, but he also dedicates his time to coaching the grade 8 debaters. Additionally, Michael Brown is recognised with the prestigious Gold award for his six best speaker awards.

The Grace College debating teams demonstrate their commitment, passion, and talent in every competition they participate in. When we asked Miss Marquardt to highlight the season for us, she had the following to say, “What stands out to me the most, beyond each debater’s individual growth this season, is their sheer commitment. The debaters do this over and above their full-time academic and sports commitments and still manage to dedicate several hours each week to this extramural. They prove to themselves and others that one truly gets out what one is willing to put in”.

Their achievements are a testament to their hard work and the support they receive from their coaches and the school community. It is clear that these learners are not only excellent debaters but also well-rounded individuals who are prepared to take on any challenge that comes their way.
