Welcome to the third issue of THE GRACE VINE  for 2018.

“He is not here, He has risen! “
Luke 24:6

Dear Grace Family,

This coming weekend we celebrate the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. He suffered death on the cross to pay in full for our sins. Luke 24:6 is such a significant passage and our faith rests solely on the fact that Jesus rose from the dead on that third day, just as it was foretold by the prophets.
I pray that this would be a time, not only for rest and relaxation, but for us all to take the time to ponder the boundless love of our Lord.
May you all have a blessed Easter.

God bless

Mr V. Luksich Headmaster

The start to the academic year saw the inception of the Grade 8 Innovation Programme led by Mrs Quibell and her team. This programme embraces an innovative approach to learning through critical thinking and experiential teaching. Read more here.

Pictured below are scenes from the Grade 8 Innovation Day on 1 March.

Our new administration program, Principal Plus, was rolled out at the beginning of this year. This meant that our report template changed and hence the new look to our reports this term. With any new system there will be niggles that must be ironed out as we move through the year. One of the features of the new admin system is the ability to email the reports at the end of the term, we are considering switching to this method in the terms to come. Please fill in the online survey regarding your preference in terms of a digital version or a printed version of your child’s report. We will analyse these results and incorporate them into our decision on the distribution of reports in the future.

In general our academics remain the foundation of the school. In this 20th year of Grace College, we celebrate the fact that we have had a 100% pass rate in matric since our first matric group sat their final exams. This is a tremendous achievement that can only be achieved through a dedicated team of academic and support staff.

Well done to the top achievers in Term 1 as well as to those students, not amongst these, who achieved better results through dedication and hard work. Here’s to a bright academic future at Grace College!

Please remember to complete the online survey.

In response to a number of parents asking for more feedback on parenting teenagers, we will be sharing a link from time to time which educationalists, who are parents in our community, have found useful. We hope you will find these helpful too.   In this issue we share the brain-changing effects of exercise.

The South African National Blood Service visited and were grateful to receive 43 donations. Everyone in our community is welcome to donate at school, including parents; diarise now for the next SANBS visit next term on Monday, 23 April in the Dümmer Hall.

An annual celebration of Afrikaans, this day is always great fun!

The junior students at Grace College went to Prestbury Pre-School, Emma Barter Home, Never Never Land Creche, EMandleni Granny Gardens, Amberfield Care Centre, Amber Glen Care Centre, Hospice, Woodgrove Retirement Home, Tabitha Ministries, Sunnyside Park Home, Midlands Feeding Scheme and to the Pietermaritzburg Children's Home where they helped wherever possible.  They engaged in conversation with people from diverse backgrounds, sang and entertained, served meals, played games, crafted, tended gardens and planted vegetables.  Every one of these little endeavours delivered mountains of joy to challenging and sometimes mundane lives.

A memorable camp in Underberg touched the hearts of our matrics, reminding many how privileged they are.  They visited Pevensey, Noah's Ark, Jabulani Creche and Clouds of Hope which is an orphanage. They interacted with young and old, playing games, chatting, bringing joy and learning more about the gifts they have to share with the world.

The Grade 11s went on their Leadership camp at Entabeni, near Giants Castle.  Through all the rain we have been having, we were blessed to have had 3 glorious days of sunshine.  The course, called Risky Business, involved physical, mental and social activities that were aimed at bringing out leadership qualities and inner strengths that had been unnoticed (in some pupils) before.  Albeit tiring, there was plenty of healthy exercise, fun and lots of laughter. On the whole, the camp was enjoyed.

Ararat, Carmel and Sinai brought entertaining performances to the stage at Grace College on Tuesday, 20 March.  The winning play was Ararat's production, 'The Pidgeon with the Silver Foot'. Well done to all who worked tirelessly rehearsing, setting the stage and directing.

At the KZN Athletics Championships held at Kings Park in Durban this month Nick De Scally ran a Personal Best for his 1500m heat, placing 3rd and then ran a Personal Best in the final. There were about 30 athletes who were selected to take part in the champs from their respective districts.
Nick managed to come 5th overall and he beat his arch-rival.
Nick achieved another Personal Best in his 800m heat and got the 3rd fastest qualifying time which would have got him a silver medal in the Free State champs final. There were 40 athletes in the heats for the 800m.
Unfortunately, Nick was so tired that he did not run the time he was hoping for and placed 7th.
There were only 3 boys in KZN who took part in the 1500m and 800m.
We are very proud of him, and congratulate him on being awarded Honours for his athletics achievements.

Chelsea Kilian and her horse Laddys Luck were placed 2nd and 3rd in the 1m10 Junior class at the ESP show jumping competition held at Durban Shongweni Club on the 3rd and 4th March 2018.

He went on to win a successive Bridge Fund Managers Tournament in Benoni and this weekend he reclaimed the title of Club Champion at Victoria Country Club.
