Sport at Grace College
We are passionate about continuously improving our sporting prowess and are very proud of what we have achieved from a pupil body that is still small in comparison to many of the schools we play against.
Grace College has achieved significant results both within the school league and the club leagues, within which we compete. Our pupils play to win and the skill level is continuously improving in terms of the main-stream school sports of Cricket, Hockey, Rugby, Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Netball, Squash, Indoor Hockey, Cross Country and Tennis.
However, we are also fortunate to have pupils who have competed both locally and internationally in some of the non-traditional schools sports, including Mountain Biking, Equestrian, Golf, Motor Sports, Downhill Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing and Martial Arts.
We believe that healthy physical activity is an important part of every child’s development and continuously strive to instil a health conscious mindset within all our pupils.
Our location provides a scenic environment for sportsmen and women to develop their sporting skills and our growing facilities already include:
- Two cricket ovals
- Two hockey fields
- Four soccer fields
- Four tennis courts
- One basketball court, and
- Three netball courts.
We are also very fortunate to have access to an astroturf for our boys’ and girls’ 1st hockey teams as well as a swimming pool. Grace College is currently developing an expansion blue-print, which will include an indoor sports facility, gym and ablution facilities capitalising on the stunning views the location offers.
Apart from the normal weekly age group inter-school matches, Grace College undertakes several sporting tours every year. The boys’ and girls’ first hockey teams travelled to the University of Potchefstroom to participate in a coaching clinic/hockey festival, while the rugby boys travelled to a rugby festival in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.
Every second year the first cricket team travel to Midrand in Gauteng where they play a combination of T20 games and 50 over games. During alternate years the Christchurch team from Gauteng will travel to Hilton for a similar series of matches.
All our teams participate in various school and club leagues and tournaments in and around the Pietermaritzburg area.
Over the years, many of our students have been wonderful ambassadors for Grace College through achieving at the highest level possible within their sporting code. We are extremely proud of our sports men and women who have represented Grace College at Provincial, National and International level.
We’d welcome the opportunity to discuss your child’s sporting talent and establish mechanisms alongside you to ensure their gift is maximised during their time with us.
